Entry One: A Rude Awakening

Sep 07, 2010 23:00

Open to anyone in his new 'family' or any late night/early morning strollers.[Lord Vetinari wakes suddenly, but without even a twitch of movement to betray the fact. Something is... off. His eyes crack open. The bed is too soft, that is the first thing he notices. The sounds are subtly wrong ( Read more... )

[She really shouldn't be up this late, but homework was hard when you're as old as human imagination and never went to school before.

She should be in bed, probably, so she puts the papers and books away, before slipping her nightgown on and going to get a drink of water... and that's when she noticed that something's off.

Empress approaches the front door and the porch area, eying the man in front of it. Briefly she looks to the pictures, noting their change, and looks back, clearing her throat lightly]

Excuse me? Sir?

[He starts turning at the sound of her footfalls, outwardly relaxed, yet tensed for action. He can't help raising an eyebrow when he sees a child behind him.]

Yes? Do you wish something, young... lady?

You've just arrived, haven't you? You must be terribly confused. [She looks sympathetic, understanding]

I can explain everything to you as best I can, Mr...?

[He regards her impassively for a long moment, ignoring her implied request for his name.]

Then I suggest you do so.

[A shadow softly makes its way down the streets of Mayfield. If Vetinari watches it at the right time, he will notice that the shadow does not step to the side for anything in its way. It simply moves through them. As it approaches Vetinari's house, it pauses for a brief second before continuing.]

. . . Good evening.

[He raises an eyebrow, staring after the shadow.]

[And there is another pause from the person before she leaves his sight entirely.]

. . . You'll excuse me for asking, but your name wouldn't happen to be Vetinari, would it?

[His eyes narrow.]

And who would be asking?

[In case the view wasn't odd enough, someone seems to be on the moonlit lawn, sitting right up against the porch. It's a while before she moves.]

...Oh. Oh, have you just arrived?

[He shows no hint of being startled at her appearance, but stands motionless for a long moment before answering.]

Yes, I believe I have.

I see... I'm sorry you've been forced to come here, but it seems we're going to be "family" from now on. May I ask your name?

[His eyebrow sweeps upwards, and his lips curl in a very small smile.]

You might ask. I am not certain if I will answer.

[The sound of a familiar policeman's gait comes through the cool air of the misty evening, and shortly after that comes Vimes, out for his evening...walk. It's not long after that that he makes as close to eye contact as the Patrician is wont to allow. And then he just stops and stares.]

[Vetinari leans on his cane, grateful that he did not go back inside after Miss Sto Helit left. Apparently she won't have to inform Vimes about his pending appointment. He manages not to smile.]

Ah, Vimes, I was informed you were here.

[Vimes pulled himself together quickly. While he wasn't completely surprised to see another from the Disc, he would have put money down on someone else. That wizard who always seemed to be running away from things for example]

Sir...So you're here now as well, Sir?

Your powers of observation continue to astound me, Commander. [He waves a hand airily.] I would appreciate your report on our... situation.
