Congrats on Conway's Life! My first try was in late 1971 in FORTRAN III. Needless to say it was not pretty. But it was better than poker chips on a chessboard. I was working off the original Scientific American articles at the time. Coding that algorithm and plotting parametric equations are probably the two things that most drove my desire to learn to program.
