I haven't gone to look, but I am amused by the posting. Back in 1975 this puzzle was going around at GTE engineering all over the world. Frustratingly, all the wives (in those days, mostly stay-at-home) solved it as you did -- pretty much at first glance, while the engineers struggled.
Of course, I guess I've got engineering blood. I never did solve it. (one of the reasons I haven't gone to look.)

Oh, that was in reference to the new person. Had never seen his id before, so I was looking at mutual friends to try to figure out who he might have discovered this journal through.

As for Petals Around the Rose, it's rather simple: (a) - b = c
I'll be the first to admit, it had me stumped for a while. I tried to apply too much logic to something that was quite simple.
