Here at the wonderful University I will call Odd and Strange University, they have food drives periodically, and my church group is helping participate in one. So yeah, the guy is a jerk. How hard would it have been to just give you a few cans of food? However, as noble as your intentions were, yes, you were soliciting. Most people who put up a sign have the vacuum salesman in mind, but a few grumps don't want to be contacted period.

I understand his being upset. Yes, I was soliciting for canned food. I'm fine with that as a description of my activities. But there's no reason to react that way. Other people didn't answer the door; others said politely that they didn't have any canned food to give. We apologized, and it wasn't until after our apology that he yelled at us.
