Southern California is burning again. The Station fire has consumed over 120,000 acres, but it's at least 50-100 miles to the northwest of me and so I didn't see much more in my own area than what appeared to be some extra smog. At one point last summer.... maybe two summers ago, I remember being much more conscious of the distant effects of forest fires. It was one night, I think the fire was considerably northwest of Albuquerque, I remember being outside with my parents. There wasn't any smog or clouds of smoke, just a discoloration in the western sky due to the haze, and we were able to stare directly at the sun as it set, a brilliant, deep red circle sitting above the horizon. It reminded me of scenes you see in movies, shots of the African Savannah with elephants crossing in front of the sunset or something.

It wasn't nearly as apocalyptically ominous as this sounds, though.

Hmmm....I take it as a sign that I'm a true Californian when I can say the apocalyptic sun is the only thing I really look forward to about fires? It's just so pretty! I mean, it doesn't bring good tidings but I figure I have to find the silver lining somewhere ;P
