I guess people not expecting the meta--people who'd started on the first three books--could certainly be thrown off by meeting King, but it's one of my favorite scenes in the series.
i think knowing definitely colored the way i read the series, for good or for ill, though i tend to think it was good to know it was coming because then i was prepared for it and also paying attention to things i might have otherwise dismissed. it's impossible to know what my reaction might have been if i hadn't known, but i think the scene was still so well-executed that i wouldn't have thrown a shoe about it.
i have to wonder about the description of the "memory" of King chopping wood and the spiders ~ true or untrue? very curious.
and i agree about the newspaper (the rest of the journal sort of lulls you into a place of yadda yadda yadda and then bang.
