Have there been other attempts to investigate and/or penetrate the barrier, other than the most recent try with the shuttle?

Yes, quite a number actually.

Investigating the barrier has proven to be difficult; many people who attempt to learn more about it in the library have spent a long time learning about anything but the barrier, and in-person examinations are fruitless, other than to report back that it's there.

As far as attempts to penetrate the barrier, there was a large scale attempt several months back, with a number of people coordinating attacks upon the barrier from different positions in the City. I believe there were a number out on the water, some in the sky and some in the Underground. There was a violent backlash from the barrier, which resulted in the majority of the participants either in the hospital comatose or with other injuries. Several of them lost their memories of the attempt, if I recall correctly.
