I had meant to finish my Sharpe-on-Blu-Ray marathon by now, but I'm stuck in 1813 and might not make it to Waterloo today. I remember when I first watched it and I was like 'PAUL BETTANY OMG'. My mum was watching it with me and she turned around and said 'Is that Chaucer?' because she remembered him from A Knight's Tale. Watching it now with him as JARVIS in the Avengers is going to be a bit interesting, as he's pretty much all I remember.
I often wonder how the people felt who didn't re enlist, or who had not fought in the Peninsular war, compared to what we see of everyone coming back together and having that shared experience, history, and short hand to rely on.
Well, I'm going to watch 'Sharpe's Waterloo' as well as 'Waterloo' tomorrow. But have been using the Sean Bean Online Gallery and their over 800 screencaps of the movie for what Sharpe was doing 200 years ago (*grins*). It was pretty weird seeing Paul Bettany and Alexis Denisof again...
And they're so little!!! Even Alexis, going 2 years from Rossendale to Wesley, looks so different. I'm used to Our Bean jumping around age-wise, but it's so noticeable for everyone else.
What really got us (being me and my mum) was when we watched Patriot Games again, because my mum didn't believe me that Sean Bean was in it, and we were watching it and Hugh Fraser popped up and my mum didn't recognise him without the nose and asked me who it was. In a way I'm kind of glad that the rest of the Chosen Men don't really get work that I can see here in Australia, because it doesn't distract from their roles in Sharpe. Like, Hagman is Hagman, and intellectually I know he's played by John Tams, but then I see him and it's Hagman, and that's more emotionally impactful for me. I am totally going to cry when I get to Waterloo and that happens, again.
Yes! I'm also watching bean-daily (coveredy advertising Sharpe and Waterloo this week), so I'm used to Bean in all his incarnations, but baby!Bettany and baby!Denisof! Oh and there are more baby!gems in the series, there's even baby!Daniel Craig, getting pushed in the mud by Sharpe!
And baby!Mark Strong, for one. It's like a who's who of British exports, up to a point. If they ever got around to making another one Benedict Cumberbatch would probably play a poncy aristo.
One of the things I loved about Waterloo was how well it was shown that everyone was coming back and falling into old friendships, like.
Ok, love the cricket bit. The Duke of Wellington remarkes that 'Sharpe bowls fiendish'! (whatever that means ;) There's a lovely bit about golf in the book as well, must find...
Hm, Sharpe's a half-pay Captain, lifted to Colonel here. Well done Sharpe. Ah, no, when he's talking to the seamstress it's Lt-Colonel.
Jane is evil, how could he ever marry her?
Everything is so very condensed... but such pretty pictures... Kopfkino time!
Oh, Paul Bettany is a wonderfully Silly Billy! *grins*
Ah, the 'I'm not taking that order' scene is grand!
Hm, the movie timeline is odd, I think there is a day missing... and several skirmishes and charges... and some scenes happen in s different order... well, getting 4 days into it is a tough job.
And we still don't get to know Harris first name ;)
And Orange is ordering Sharpe to La Haye Sainte? And they have the Hougoumont action there?!?
LOVE LOVE LOVE Sharpe's map fixation!
Ah, the La Haye/Hougoumont thing is to get in how Silly Billy's ordering line vs cavalry again. To give Sharpe a good view of it, allright.
Oh, there IS the arrest and English gesture scene! *cheers*
