My contribution to the March Picture Challenge. Short, and somewhat dirty at the end.

“So what is it then?”
“Just… things.”
“What sort of things?”
“Just things.”
Harris looked over the top of his captain’s head to appeal to Harper.
“What does he mean, Sarge?”
“Don’t ask me, Harris!” Harper growled in reply. “He’s in a stinking mood with everyone this morning.”
“So would you be!” Sharpe snapped back suddenly. “If you had -”
Harper lifted his chin in grim triumph as Sharpe hurriedly bit back the rest of his sentence.
“Go on, then,” he challenged. “I’d be miserable too if I’d what?”
Sharpe glared at his sergeant, knowing that he’d been backed into a corner he could not escape. He shrugged grudgingly and let out an irritated huff.
“If… if you’d discovered that things aren’t what you’d thought they were.”
“And again, what are these ‘things’, Richard?” Colonel Lawford had arrived now, and Sharpe stiffened as he joined them perched on the set of stone steps.
“It’s nothin’, sir,” he said doggedly.
“It is obviously something, Sharpe,” Lawford replied. “Else I seriously doubt you would be wearing an expression like a beaten bloodhound. So tell me once and for all; what is the matter?”
Sharpe squirmed beneath the gaze of three pairs of eyes, wrestled with his conscience and then gave a long, hefty sigh.
“I’ve got a few grey hairs, alright?”
There was a perplexed silence.
“But why has that made you so miserable?” asked Lawford, after a moment's contemplation. “I didn’t think vanity was one of your vices.”
“It isn’t,” Sharpe huffed. “An’ I wouldn’t have minded, ‘cept Nosey pointed it out to me this morning.”
“I would hardly have thought His Lordship would have taken the time to notice!” Lawford scoffed, squinting at Sharpe’s temples. “So where are these ‘few grey hairs’ supposed to be, anyway?”
Not, Sharpe thought bitterly, where you are looking.
