A book recommendation and a general question

Item the first: book rec.  I've just started reading City of Laughter: Sex and Satire in Eighteenth-Century London by Vic Gatrell.  (Detailed LA Times review here.)  Highly recommended to anyone who's a nerd for history in this time period in general -- I figure there's got to be at least a few people who fit that description in this community.  ^_^  And the cheerful bawdiness of some of the prints reminded me of Benjamin Franklin (especially this letter written to a friend in 1745).

Item the second: general discussion question.  I'm always curious about what pulls people into a fandom, so I thought I'd pose the question here.  What drew you to 1776?  What do you love about it?  Why does it stick with you?  What about it resonates the most?

Floor's open -- go for it!

(Me?  I'm a sucker for the human faces and stories behind the historical events, as the book rec probably indicates as well.  And I'm also a damn foolish idealist; to give you an idea, I posted "Is Anybody There?" on my LJ on Election Day with the note that "If that doesn't put you in the right frame of mind to go do your civic duty, I don't know what will.")
