I heard on the radio that some "gay advocacy group" is targeting my home state with a campaign titled "Virginia Is For Haters." Apparently because our state legislature passed a reprehensible law back in 1997 prohibiting same-sex unions (among other things), this group has decided to ask all gays and their friends to boycott Virginia ( Read more... )

agreed with everything you say. it seems as if we take two steps forward, one back. it really irks me that we may never see equality in our lifetime. this foot-shooting business has got to stop. i have no toes left.

I don't know if we'll ever see total equality, but I think we're about to see a lot of progress. Just watch how badly the proposed constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage loses in the U.S. Senate this week. I think it's going to send a HUGE signal that our society favors tolerance and equality over hatred and discrimination.

The biggest changes are going to come through the courts. I think there's an excellent chance that even the current, conservative Supreme Court will support the rights of gays to marry.

Of course I'd like to see it all happen overnight, but I think we're seeing some real progress. Numerous polls have shown that younger voters are less likely to be anti-gay than older voters, so I really think that time is on our side.

I am glad you keep up with the news. I totally forgot about the proposed amendment being this week.

I agree that time is on our side, and with everything else going on, it will happen rather rapidly. I only see progression in the future.

Time loves tolerance.

boycott the state of VA? alexanderwolf July 12 2004, 00:07:25 UTC
That is a harebrained scheme, if I ever heard one. After I read that, I immediately thought of the song 'Blame Canada' from the South Park movie - in that, blaming an entire region for something is just so ridiculous and comical.

As for outing the so called evil doers, I think that also sounds childish. It is like tattling on the someone, back in the playground circa elementary school. Maybe it will be for the better, but that doesn't seem likely. Using scare tactics could be the totally 'wrong' approach.

~ but we will see ~
