RIP Sirius Black

June 2003- July 2008

You were clunky, noisy, slow and downright temperamental at times but damn it all you got me through my last years at school and held on 'til University Graduation. You were a great laptop. I'll miss you.

Eep, hard disk failures are always bad. Recovery places will be very expensive, so it's really only for critical irreplaceable data (like your final year project, the week before it's due).

For new laptops, I can strongly recommend any Thinkpad. Something like a R60 or R61 will have enough grunt for anything short of Oblivion, deliver its rated battery life, and actually handle real everyday usage (my R50e survived three years of heavy university usage and is still going strong).
