Socks with a mind of their own

The gansey socks out of the Knitters Without Borders-colorway yarn don't want to be for me.  They want to be much, much larger.  They want to be Ron's.  Fortunately, he has no objection to purple, white, grey, and pink socks.  (The purple is looking more purple now that I'm knitting it up, and it looks better knitted up than in the ball). I've had that issue a lot lately. What was your gauge?

8 stitches per inch, on the toe (and now that I've tightened up). Which is what the pattern calls for for a medium sock.
