The news that the current pope is stepping down did not escape me today, and neither did the sadly all-too-predictable reactions from certain quarters of the internet that I shan't name, including friends who I had really hoped would have known better

There was a teacher at our local community college when I was growing up who has been in the HJ as a boy. I don't think anyone held it against him. So I've never understood people equating Ratzinger's membership with actual Naziism. There are plenty of other legitimate reasons to disagree with and dislike the man. Flinging "Nazi" around just feels like a lazy cheap shot.
