Could it seem difficult because they essentially had a "boat load of children?" Doing something in training and doing it for real and under pressure are two different things.
The folding katana was cool and would indicate that Sulu actually studied kendo are some other Japanese martial art and kind of harkens to his cultural roots (samurai), but yes fencing involves thrusting and the katana is a slashing sword.
I also noticed subtle and not so subtle references to the many Star Trek games that have come and gone over the years. Mainly ships and systems from the Starfleet Command games. And those shipshave mass. They don't turn on a dime like the TNG ships did.
I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. Glad you did a write-up, too, because I certainly wouldn't have. I loved young Kirk, and that really surprised me. Everyone else was decent (except Sulu) but Kirk was just fabulous. I only wish there had been a Shatner cameo.
The katana I'm kind of willing to let go. Sulu after all was trained to fence, and we all saw him go nuts with a foil in The Naked Time. You can't really attack someone with a fencing foil in actual combat, though.
I have nothing but burning hatred for Nokia. Both the Hitchhiker's Guide movie and now this? They are shamelessly marketing to nerds. And it's backfiring badly.
Whoever cast this needs a fuckin' award. They did good.

I agree, the katana was cool, but it still threw me a bit.
Yeah, the game references were a nice touch. And a few nods to Enterprise, as well as some of the novels (Kirk's youth, etc).
That also bugged me. Ships in the Trekverse use a subspace field to reduce their mass even at impulse (technical manual by the Okudas).

Likewise about neo-Kirk. I'm a TOS fan, so I'm a hard sell there.
What threw you off about Cho's Sulu? I thought he did pretty good.
