This morning, while commuting in moderate traffic and going about 65 mph, I was passed by a motorcycle like I was standing still. He was riding the center line between the two lanes of the four lane highway, barely hinting at changing lanes. By the time I got around the bend and could look miles down the road he was gone.

...potential Darwin effect.

Not enough of them are dying apparently, since they're proliferating at a remarkable rate.

It's probably bad that I'm as defensive of my car as I am... someone hits me, I have no doubt in my mind that I'll kill them in cold blood in retribution.

Actually, I'd say they're about on par. Both abysmally bad.

You can't say I didn't warn you. I'll try to find the Dave Barry column about him worrying about his son reading the drivers manual (he lives in the Miami area) and actually expecting anyone on the road to be following any of the rules contained within...

Yes, you're not in Miami. But you're not that far from it... and it's generally symptomatic of Florida drivers in general.

And yes, you do drive like a grandma. You were getting better, yes, but you still do :-)

True. But being warned and almost killed by an asshole in a silver minivan are two entirely different things.

I drive in a way that I know the car can handle... and you'll notice that she takes care of me in return. :P

The level of bad is about the same. I just wasn't quite prepared to be nearly run off the road because someone else was being a jackass.

It's everywhere now. Tons of bad drivers here in Phoenix, everyone in a rush and usually 15+ over the posted limits on the surface streets. I learned long ago to be observant while driving. People think I drive aggressively, but it's that I drive confidently and defensively meaning I *will* protect myself from their actions. I know what I can do and what the car can do ( ... )

As do I. Which is why I don't care what comments people make about how I drive... I know what my car can do, and I anticipate and demand of it accordingly.

I wish I had that confidence... as things stand now, I think people around here don't give a shit if they're in an accident. The people in new cars know insurance will cover it (fucking no-fault) and the ones in older shitty cars will just take the whole vehicle for a loss. I have actually watched cars be rear-ended at traffic lights around here. I didn't even seen *that* level of assholery on Long Island.

I need to check Florida state laws... I'm very temped to do exactly that.

That's why I included that link in my last post. it's to FL gun laws at the NRA site.
