meta: The Freedom to Live: The Angels Take Manhattan

A meta, written with so much love in me for the end of the story of Amelia Pond. Looking at: the episode as the final stage of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey; Doctor Who as myth; River Song's role; the use of the X symbol, lightbulbs and eggs; mirroring, looking glasses and metaphors; juxtaposition of opposites; parallels with other stories.

Lovely to see we both spent our afternoons in similar ways *g* I shall be back tomorrow to read this, as I'm brain-whapped at the mo'.

It occurred to me (while I was trying to limit the length of my meta) that this episode is SO rich I could easily have written meta just on the Chandler/knight tropes, and film noir.

So, rich, magical and poignant. And in the first ten minutes you had me noticing X's on elevator doors, thresholds crossed (Rory's predominantly) mirrors, shadows. You name it.

Back on the morrow...

I still need to read your pre-ep meta on the film noir themes. I know nothing at all about film noir or hard boiled detective novels, so it should be interesting!

Ah, once you start seeing all the symbols, you cannot unsee! That's it now!

She's the girl who waited over and over, the girl whose child was stolen away by the goblins, the girl who loved and lost and loved again. She's the girl who watched the man she loved die, the girl who died with him, the girl who read his gravestone and then gave up the magical world of her imaginary friend to be with him. She's the girl who Loved....and, of course, the girl who gave up her child, her only possible child, to feed the Doctor. To lose a daughter to marriage is a universal experience, but Amy and Rory lost theirs from Day 1, and when she was returned to them it was in a strangely parental role. In a sense the Doctor deprived Amy and Rory of their chance to nurture any being other than himself. He was the ultimate cuckoo in their nest ( ... )

I must say, I do find your metas very profound and very thought out. I love reading them and I enjoy the imagery that you point out that I don't see at first. It makes me appreciate the episodes a bit more.
