I did a tarot reading for a new-on-the-scene character in my novel, a thing I've never done before, and discovered something significant and slightly disconcerting about her past. ( Nattering about writing and tarot )
Many psychologists love tarot because its all about symbols. I imagine readings for characters would be a useful thing to do. As for alternate imagery... there are so many different kinds of fortune telling cards these days, you could probably make your own pack.
Universal Waite. Basically Rider-Waite with prettier, girlier pictures. I could probably find a deck made to order for my story, but I can't design my own because of aforementioned chickenscratch drawing. :-P
Lots of times the decks are designed by one person, and drawn by another. You could write all the specific bits and have someone else draw it.
I started with the Aquarian and Herbal, but now I use the Motherpeace. I'm also familiar with the Osho Zen, and Haindl. In high school I was known for telling fortunes using an Uno deck. It was a joke that ended up being remarkably insightful.
UNO tarot! That I'd like to see. What colors did you use for what suits? I use a regular deck of cards when I don't have my tarot deck handy, but I find the lack of major arcana upsetting.
I keep meaning to experiment with other decks... the Herbal one looks awesome, and I've seen some other really pretty, interesting-looking ones. But the trouble is they won't let you do readings with them until after you buy them, and I hate to drop money on something I might end up not being comfortable with.
