Gandalf's fireworks

Nov 08, 2009 16:57

Last night was the Taruithorn bonfire and Gandalf's fireworks. The moon was out, the night was clear, and teh_elb and I set out from Magdalen Bridge around six with torches and bike lights through the dark towards the river. It was, I said at the time, my kind of adventure - there was darkness, and there was moonlight, and there were whispering rustles in ( Read more... )

Gandalf's fireworks is, in many ways, my perfect event. I thin keven in preference to the banquet. There's something so beautifully glorious in the gentle fireworks and a roaring fire and the serene calm of the river behind you. Add to that all the wonderful people and mulled wine and tiffin and it just makes it, for me at least, the quintessential experience of being in Oxford.

...and, of course, only makes me more sad that I'm no longer here. But enough of that. Also, I did not nearly drop the log on Marco! the log went in before Marco as an ill-fated attempt to hook the firestick.

It was a really lovely event, wasn't it? It makes me very, very happy, pretty much for all the reasons you describe.

I apologise for the slander! But it was a very impressive log. :P

Taruithorn always makes me feel like I'm living in an Enid Blyton novel.

You too, huh? Imagine joining up as a brand new fresher who's just arrived from the other side of the world. Given that my college and my course were very heavily dominated by foreign students, Taruithorn was my main point of contact with actual British people (and undergrads!). I may have formed a warped view as a result ;-)

Also, your post makes Marco's recent Facebook update make rather more sense.

And now I'm curious to know whether the prosecution against Bilbo & Thorin succeeded. I don't take anything for granted anymore, after witnessing the acquittal of...damn, I can't remember if it were Sauron or Saruman, but it was rather surprising anyway!

Prosecution succeeded on all counts but that pertaining to the murder of Smaug - however, we were released without charge, which I felt was an excellent sentencing.

The Second Defendant lies, as his wont; they were successfully prosecuted on all charges, and sentenced to nothing at all. It was something of a Pyrrhic victory.

YAY! It was such a good night; I have to wash the smell of woodsmoke out of my hair. Just food and fire and conversation... *HUGS* XD
