America, Love it or Shut the Fuck Up!

Jan 26, 2007 19:08

I have recently begun to wonder at not just the lack of enthusiasm for the current adminstration (i am not their biggest fan either) but the lack of faith in America. I am honestly appalled that words like meritocracy and democracy, freedom, and especially The American Dream only seem to appear in sarcastic quotation marks and with a sneer audible ( Read more... )

I don't know, to elaborate a bit more... I think I agree with what you said in general if not each specific (though most hit head on). It's easy to criticize anything and everything and never go out and make changes. With all the brilliant political bullshit some people speak out, I often wonder when or how they will ever be content to live in this world that is so glaringly wrong in their eyes. I mean, fix it. Get off your ass and fix it. I don't pretend to support Bush or anyone in office, but there's a damn fine chance I will argue against someone who criticizes. Take the office for example, it's easy to say that the government is wrong in the world when you're a kid sitting at a desk playing Ragnarok Online or pretending to be a Wizard killing dragons, I've done my fair share, but I try not to cast stones on the president. Being President is a hard job, one where you'll be constantly observed, monitored, and laughed at for mistakes. Though admittedly I don't think most people agree with the war, and I won't claim I do, but run for ( ... )

On another side note... I've played princes in multiple vampire larps and other games now... in a position like that where everyone is looking to you for guidance and watching every move for weakness and a chance to exploit, it's terribly stressful. I mean, I honestly don't know why I like doing it so often. I can't even begin to imagine how much harder it is to make real world decisions that might kill real people and affect millions on a day to day basis. I mean standing in front of a larp and trying to be as graceful and perfect as people expect is hard enough, but doing it in front of millions... that I can't even imagine.

Kudos to past presidents who've mustered through that.

America may not be perfect, and as a creation of flawed men, it is unlikely to ever be. It could however be better. And it is up to the Americans willing to work to make it happen.

how is this going to happen if we do not honestly admit our flaws and imperfections and address them in a way that rectifies the problems created by those who were once in power?
I would really like to know how we are to create a better future if the past is not to be taken into account?

"The credit goes not to the credit but the man who takes action."
Pointing out america's flaws in order to correct them is fine. Mocking the dream, the entire system, saying improvement is impossible without trying to effect change is not acceptable. Additionally while those people who prompted me to post this often point out the flaws, they never point to the admriable traits in this most noble experiment of ours. While i don't mean to come off as a jingoistic extremist, I still think that it is better than being an unpatriotic nay sayer who never tries.

Go ahead and point out the holes in the boat, but do it while you bail or get out of the boat.

While i don't mean to come off as a jingoistic extremist,
If you "don't mean" to express this sentiment then why do it? You have enough of a command over the English language to express your sentiment with it being full of cliche's that you purposefully employ for your argument.

Ad Hominem attacks huh? I have ceased to be surprised. I said while i "don't mean to come off as a jingoistic extremist" so that people wouldn't take it in that fashion, but instead of jingoism see simple patriotism. But if the choice in Jingoism or the flagrant america hate that seems to be the fashion, *puts on his red white and blue jacket*, no problem.
