For once, I have a bunch of pictures from across the span of my trip, so here are some pictures to show you what I did for the 4th weekend. ( I'll be nice and cut 'em. )
I hadn't been to Pirates game in four years, so I honestly don't remember my personal record. I think they lost that last one... But we used to go all the time in the early 90s when they were still good, so I know I did see a lot of wins back in the day. :)
And yes, summer salads would be my favorite "category" of food, if that's a thing. I LOVE them all, but especially fruit salad. When I was little, I used to ask for fruit salad for my birthday - not as a menu item, but that's what I wanted as a gift. It got to be a running joke; my Aunt Marianne would bring me a tupperware with a bow every year. So awesome. Now that we live in different states, she doesn't really mail me perishables.
I always tell people who are visiting Pittsburgh in the summer that it's worth it to go to a game whether they care about baseball or not, because it's just such a nice view and a day in the sun with hot dogs and ice cream. Or, if they ARE baseball fans, I encourage them to find a day when there's a good visiting team. ha!
Those salads look YUMMY. Also, I have to tell you that I have never appreciated fireworks until I saw them at the Point on the 4th. Those are serious fireworks!! I have never seen anything better.
Mike saw a great documentary on the Zambellis on the Discovery Channel. If I can find a link for it, I will send it!
Yeah, much like the jello/pretzel salad, I didn't really learn that fireworks were so rare everywhere else until I left Pittsburgh. Who knew? Around here, you can only see real fireworks maybe twice a year, but back home you can find a 4th-of-July grade display practically every other week, whether at baseball games or assorted festivals... In fact, I don't think ANY of my family left that 4th of July party to see the downtown fireworks because it was like, "Oh, I've already seen them three times this summer."
In fact, the last time I was in town, last month? ... Caught some fireworks: another baseball Skyblast night that we could see from the Guster show across the river. haha!
1. Thank you! 2. Meeeeee too. Aunt Barbara (she of the patriotic t-shirts) is the broccoli salad master, but I don't think she made this one. It was still delicious. 3. The best part about Pat's pants is that they're pajama pants. I'm known for wearing holiday socks out of season, but I don't go much further than that.
3. I might have to take it back now that i know they're PAJAMA pants, but I'll give her a pass because they're 1/3 of the holiday-appropriate color scheme.
Also: I'm not sure how many pairs he owns, but I feel like every time I see the top of my brother's boxers when he bends over, they're snowman boxers. I house sat for them once in the middle of summer and pinned a note to a pair I folded advising him that they were unseasonal.
Really, you just have to give her a pass because dressing Pat is such a challenge that it's a success any time she shows up and is NOT wearing either a) a turtleneck under her shirt or b) her work uniform.
