I went to a roller derby bout this afternoon. That now makes it three states I have seen bouts in! (And four states' teams I've seen compete!) I kind of feel like I should get a badge if I get to see a bout in every state.
Your posts on roller derby make me wanna go find someplace to do it. I don't think it's very popular here. Your posts also make me wanna watch Whip It, which I have been meaning to watch for forever, but keep losing the time to do so.
First thing I thought when I saw your picture was, "What are the two pivots doing at the back?"! I love the name Mile Die Club... something else great about derby, there is actually a sense of humour to it all.
It was a bit of an odd bout - most jams the pack travelled really slowly to let the jammers catch up, and sometimes the opposing blockers would deliberately slow down and split up the pack if they couldn't stop the other jammer from getting through. Very defensive play.
Have I ever asked you what your derby name is? Are you bouting yet? Tell me everything!
Bouted once then was on the reserve but luckily nobody on the team was ill/injured so I didn't play second time around. Generally I play pivot or blocker 2 (too skinny to be a mega hitter :P). I'm quite a big fan of the slow play because if you can trap a blocker from the other team and slow right down it forces them to play to your hand.
The league has just undergone reorganisation so we now have home teams and will have a travel team. I didn't put myself forward for the travel team though, as both of our planned bouts are June/July - for one we are away on honeymoon and the other is too soon before the wedding so I don't want to skate, as i don't really want to be hobbling down the aisle on crutches! - you never know what could happen so better to be safe than sorry.
Ha, thanks - actually been engaged since August and going a bit crazy with it now! The whole Wedding with a capital W sort of takes over and I keep forgetting that the result will be that I am MARRIED (sounds grown up...) and what it means. Sort of gets lost amongst the family politics and caterers being annoying and people asking you all the freaking time what are the invitations like and when are you sending them and does the venue have car parking and what will we be eating and what is your dress like and oh! tell me every last detail so I will know everything before I actually go to your wedding!
