I heard that on the radio and thought of you. Is yours one of the stores affected? *hugs* if so.

Yeah, our store's shutting down on Saturday. They're not wasting time over it.

You've handed in your notice though haven't you? And if you haven't, is there anything in it for you?

I did hand it in, but it hadn't been processed yet. So I'm not sure where I stand. As it is I gave two weeks' notice, but we're closing this Saturday (a week before).

So, who knows. I'll have to talk to my manager. It's just a different matter, walking away and knowing it'll be there to visit, to being thrown out and the whole store vanishing. It's heartbreaking.

I think you have fabulous timing - serendipity is a wonderful thing :)

I think I have awful timing. The number of stores that have closed after I've worked in them has just gone up exponentially! I am a curse!

I found your journal through the barista community. I am sorry about the whole starbucks in australia thing. This barista from Texas thinks that sucks for ya'll.

PS I added you to my friend's list because I think you sound interesting.

Ah, I think I recognise your little scribbly picture. :) I like how America got several months to get used to the news, we just get a couple of days. I think most of us are still in shock.

Yes, the closings there seem very...abrupt and unfair.

They just said on the radio that it was because Starbucks was "never able to compete with Australia's entrenched cafe culture". Interesting.

I heard that too. And the comment about "the inferior product". Thanks, retail adviser-dude on the radio. Way to kick people when they're down.

I agree with the first part. Starbucks was always seen as an outsider, and Melbourne's always been proud of its coffee culture. Within our store too, we felt that Starbucks was just ignoring the nature of the Melbourne market, just kept trying to make it fit the American model it had developed.

The second part just offends me, obviously. I know how hard we worked in that store.

Yeah, that part seemed unecessary. The quality of the coffee is subjective, so it's pretty pointless to go making definitive pronouncements about it like that.

As ah'm now a Sydneysider, I find myself wondering 'what cafe culture?'

That mythical Melbourne place sure seems to have one, but the big smoke doesn't.
