hoperomantic, thank you for my virtual gift! I hope you had a lovely Samhain as well.

1. Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris. I mostly read this one to see what all the fuss is about re: the series. The two things I remember off the bat are ( Read more... )

Have to say, I'm not that fond of the True Blood series, but I really enjoyed Charlaine Harris's other series, with the chick who has an ability to find dead bodies. One of the books is like, Grave Surprise, and I think the three books there are for it so far all have 'grave' references in the title. It's so much more interesting to me than the whole Sookie shebang. This one doesn't have hordes of love interests, for one, lol, that is always a plus.

I so hear you on the lack of third person pov. I wish the first person pov trend would stop, I used to refuse to read books with that device but it's so hard to find anything without it these days. *sigh*

Re: True Blood, I just don't recall finding any of the characters particularly engaging. If I don't care about the characters, why would I invest myself in their stories? I'm anticipating not going past book 2, unless it blows me away with its awesomeness for some reason.

First person pov is not a make-it-or-break-it aspect for me, but it does detract from my enjoyment of a story. I dunno, I guess it's one of those cyclical things where it will be around for a while before fading out (hopefully soon...!).

Exactly. I think TB is another one in the increasingly popular trend of 'living vicariously' through the main character- it doesn't matter what the plot is, just that the main chick is super hot and attracts all kinds of sexy dudes. I finished book one but gave up after that.

I do think the other series is a lot better. I really felt for the main chick, she's had a hard life- and I think that's why it's superior, because she doesn't come off like an author insert, y'know? Things don't always go well for her, it doesn't magically work out, flocks of hotties don't descend to fight for her hand and to make her life better. And she's kind of an investigator and there's mysteries, which is really cool, 'coz as you can imagine, having a magic sense that helps you find bodies comes in handy there!

First person used to be a deal-breaker, but I've had to get over that since it's a major trend these days. PLEASE FADE OUT SOON. The thing that bugs me is that the blurb doesn't have first person, so I'll borrow a book and then get annoyed when ( ... )

I tend to get all *roll-y eyes* about characters that are just so damn hot that everyone wants them, or have something special like silver or violet eyes. Just. No, thank you. The clichés, they hurt me.

I might check out that other series when I get through my 'wish list' of ebooks and if my library has any of them in stock. :) They sound much more my speed.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone's ever conducted a survey of any kind that investigates people's thoughts regarding first person vs third person pov. I sense a poll coming on....
