Elizabeth paused at the top of the puddle jumper’s ramp, where she turned to take a final look at the view before they returned to Atlantis. She breathed deeply, inhaling the scent of trees and earth and, faintly, the man standing a few steps behind her. "This was a good day."

"So I’m forgiven for kidnapping you?"

Elizabeth looked down at where he stood below her on the ramp's incline and grinned widely as she met his eyes. "I'll consider it." As much as she'd protested being dragged away from the city, she had to admit that it had been a much-needed break. With all of the uncertainties of this past half-year, she'd spent less and less time doing things simply for the pleasure of it. It was amazing how an afternoon spent hiking beneath the sun and trees could leave her feeling so much freer. Lighter.

John was still staring up at her with an odd expression on his face and Elizabeth tilted her head in silent question. "It's nothing," he told her, shaking his head a little, and she thought he looked a little embarrassed. "It's just... I haven't seen you this relaxed in a long time." He shrugged one shoulder. "You should smile more."

Elizabeth felt her grin soften into a smile at the unexpected intimacy of the moment. "So should you," she returned, lightly brushing her fingers over his lips.

She wasn't sure if he leaned up or she leaned down. When she thought about it later, she suspected that they'd met somewhere in the middle.

John's lips were dry and chapped beneath hers, his hands drifting to her waist as lips parted and tongues met, retreated, met again. She brought her hands to his face, one stroking through his hair to hold him closer, the other on his cheek, her thumb caressing surprisingly soft skin. His arms slid around her waist and the gentle pressure on her lower back encouraged her to move closer even as he took a step forward.

When the kiss ended, they parted only far enough to be able to breathe; Elizabeth could still feel his warm, unsteady breath against her lips. She let her hands slide down to rest on John's chest, the steady thump-thump of his heartbeat beneath her palm lending stability to an otherwise surreal moment.

Elizabeth tilted her head back and they stared at each other for a moment before she found herself smiling once again. John's mouth quirked up in response. Her hand skimmed across his chest to his shoulder and then down his arm to capture his fingers in her own, and she turned back to the puddle jumper. "You're forgiven for kidnapping me," she decided aloud, and heard John chuckle as he followed her to the forward section.
