I read an interesting article today called "Straightening Out Serge Mouret: Confession and Conversion in Zola's La Faute de l'abbé Mouret" written by Wade Edwards.  It appeared in the Fall-Winter 2005-2006 issue of Nineteenth-Century French Studies.  I can upload ( Read more... )

Wow, I loved what you wrote about the article. Don't upload it because I don't have the time to read it, but I thought it was close to fascinating (but then again, I'm fascinated by sexual history).

Anyway, nice read :) thank you.

I was reading about Zola today in Flanner's "Paris Was Yesterday." She was writing about the scandal claimed by Zola's family after the Hollywood film of "Nana." A typical line of hers:

"The French Authors' League even said the film "seemed part of a plan to weaken France's prestige, literary and moral" which was the first anyone knew that 'Nana' had anything to do with either."

(Then I went looking for my mechanic to see if my car was ready and was told that it had been ready for 'ages,' they just hadn't wanted to disturb my reading. I've decided to find this adorable.)
