I'm hoping to be new to London! I plan to apply to grad school at Western for this fall (or whenever they'll let me in). My boyfriend and I are planning to move to London together and I was hoping someone could give me information on the job market in education. He will be a certified elementary school teacher and we've had no problem finding out ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, he will likely have a difficult time finding a job. I know several people who have just graduated teachers college and are having no luck finding a job (most of them are substituting, some can't even do that).

I suppose it all depends on when you come, but I know right now, people are having a very difficult time...

Ontario_teacher might be able to suggest things or give you a better idea of how easy it is to find a job.

(I was only speaking from the info I get from friends/my mom who is a teacher.)

Good luck!

In case you haven't already found these.

There are also many smaller private schools in London, some religious, so you may want to look around a bit. The only one I can think of is this one:

A friend of mine did substitute teaching and worked at Sylvan while waiting for hours from the schoolboard to pick up.

Good luck!

I wasn't quite sure how to approach the search for private schools so this is a huge help. Thank you.

I'd love to tell you that it's great - but if there is anywhere else or any other type of work he could do, he should seek it out. There are over 1700 supply/teachers searching for full time or pieces of contracts here, and the search will take a few years. I've been looking along with 5-10 others I personally know and it's so difficult, I am considering leaving the province.

I would love to sugar coat it, but unless he specifically has French or Music - it's going to be a very frustrating and trying time for him. He won't be able to get supply teaching work as they haven't hired for the list for over a year. He'd be best to attempt to get work in the Catholic board or private sector - I won't do that because I don't agree with Religion in schools, but I've been supply for three years - and it's not looking up for anyone I know.

Good luck ..

Hello...

I also agree with the previous posts.. I have also been on the TVDSB supply list here in London for 3 years and have finally received a small LTO job. Our union is telling us that to get a full time contract job it will likely take 5-6 years. I don't want you to give up your dream of being a teacher but you need to be realistic in your expectations. Expect to wait to get on the supply list for about a year and then expect to wait for that ever small contract position before you will receive full time. I hope that you have French or music--if you do totally disregard this stuff b/c you will find a job fast. Don't give up..just know it will take you some time.
