The last week-end of August we went to visit Highclere Castle (the 'real' Downton Abbey) on the Sunday, and as we had a car we went down to the Kent coast on the Saturday ( Read more... )

Wonderful photos! I'm with Adrian. I went off "Downton Abbey", which I had previously loved, when they introduced the story line about Anna Bates being raped. I found I couldn't stick around waiting for the dowager's quips. Each episode felt like it was three hours long:)

Thank you, Neil!
Yes poor Anna - and the ordeal is not over for her yet :-(

I know what you mean: I enjoy much more the lighthearted parts too.

Thanks so much for this! It's a journey I've always wanted to make, but doubt that I will, now. The castle is more interesting to me than most, and the gardens are lovely. Great to see that they are being updated as well as maintained. Ah, the White Cliffs of Dover ... on my bucket list. I couldn't do the walk, but I would love to see them if only from a distance. Best to you and Adrian. I agree, btw, about Downton Abbey: it HAS become a soap opera.

How are you, Bob? I hope your convalescence is going well and that you are not too bored with it.

We only did a bit of the cliff walk: the weather wasn't the best and it was already late. Maybe another time.

Big hugs to you both!

Thanks for asking about my health. Last Thursday, I finally got rid of the catheter after 2.5 months (I had 5 altogether) and am able to pass urine. Such a relief. Unfortunately, other problems remain, so I'm not "all clear" yet. And, of course, I picked up a bad cold, as did Paul, as we made our way in and out of hospitals. I am advised to expect a long recuperation period--up to eight months! This means that I have spent the whole of this year sick ... and will begin 2015 in a similar fashion. Really, it is so discouraging, for both of us. But, at least we have each other, and are home together. Hugs.

Great to hear that the catheter has finally gone - I can imagine your relief! - but sorry about such a long convalescence.
Sending you big hugs!

I was surprised that you had such lovely dahlias at this time of year, and then I read "the last week-end of August". LOL

These are very fine photos, and as I view them it occurs to me I first learned of the White Cliffs of Dover in Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Thank you!
Oh yes they had a lovely collection of dahlias. We took pictures of some of them with their names and hopefully we'll manage to find some for our garden.
