I'm sorry to hear that so much of the crowd wasn't polite, or even marginally civil.
Pride parades/festivals in the States - my experience, anyway - have become these interesting mash-ups of friendly straight folks (with and w/o kids in tow), gay/lesbian couples (same), and sober-and-not contingents of the Old Guard and the New. But the completely wasted, disheveled cohort of any of them is much smaller than it used to be.
Part of what you say about the pride festivals in the US applies to the one in Brighton as well: it was quite mixed and lots of people were there to party/get pissed (in the British sense! LOL!)
