My (Irish) parents are similar. But after I was rather aloof with them for several years, they seemed to understand that I could have quite a nice life without them in it. I didn't want that, but if they disrespected me I wouldn't subject myself to them.
Since then they haven't come to love my gayness, but they at least know to be well-mannered. When querrelle and I announced our engagement, Ma said "I don't believe in that."
"Well I'm not the easter bunny Ma, you can believe in us."
Well thank you for that... it cheered me up! (Though I won't try the Easter Bunny bit as the poor Bunny is still unknown in Italy and my parents eat rabbit! LOL!)
