It's a complex clause to parse; don't feel badly about your English, please. It's the only language in which I'm fluent and I still had to read the sentence twice to take in all of it.

Does it help to think of it as "...it would probably be as great a mistake as [this action] had been"?

or to rephrase it:

It had been a great mistake of the Healers to try to force him to talk about his connection with Fred; Harry trying to force George to talk now might be as much of a mistake.

I hope that helps a little and that I've not overstepped in responding.

and your explanation was very helpful indeed - I understood the sentence but not the grammer but know I hope I got both (^_^)

@lomonaaeren: sorry agian for saying you made a mistake, when in fact you did not, because your writing style is just that much more awesome than my knowlege of decent english

You're welcome.

When I was in school at maybe nine or ten, we had to diagram sentences and parse out the clauses and verbs and nouns and things. I never, ever thought I'd use it in real life. I suppose we should listen to our teachers after all.

Isn't the story fabulous so far? I'm wondering which of the guys will come up with a gift next, not with any special meaning, but because he saw it and thought of the other.

At first, I thought it was just the fact that it was Malfoy, Draco, that people were objecting to - but this runs much deeper and that's a bit sad. I'm glad that Harry won't allow himself to become a possession, not for the public at large, not for the Ministry, not even for the best of his friend's sake. If nothing else, his association with Draco might actually help a few of Harry's friends onto the path of healing, even if the motive that gets them there is a bit selfish.

I like the fact that he's willing to experience new things about the culture he's chosen to live in and that he's not willing to allow Draco to become complacent about his own life either. Kudos to you.

Harry knows that he could be overrun with his friends' needs if he let himself. It's one reason that he draws such a thick line between "things I can do to help other people" and "things that hurt me," and he won't let himself be pulled over to that other side of the line.

He would love for his friends to start healing, but he knows that has to be their choice.

Harry and Draco feel more comfortable when they're together, that's good.

That pudding soup sounds delicious!

Thanks!

And yes, they do. It's taken Harry by surprised to realize just how comfortable they are, but it's good now.

I find it kind of sad that Draco was laboring under the impression that friendship is quid pro quo. I trust Harry will change his mind.

He just kind of assumed that there was no reason to think that Harry would make friends with him outside those customs.

He didn't know how very little Harry cares for those customs. :)

Thank you! Harry is the kind of person I wish I could be; in real life I'm not nearly as understanding.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that conversation between Ron and Molly, I must say.
