I went and reread that moment when Lucius pretended not to know what the Mirror Maze was in Bloodied... and it is so delicious that Lucius thinks he is fooling Harry. How much they do get him, and how much they do not. Mmmmm. In some ways Harry has their measure.
Though next up is the crystal pendants scene. :( I don't know how I can bear it again.
The Malfoys do have an unfortunate tendency to think that Harry is stupid in the realm of intelligence because he also lacks common sense. Of course, they would be utterly shocked at the notion that they don't really understand him as well as they think they do. :)
The crystal pendants scene? I'm not sure what you mean.
I forget how it goes, exactly. But Harry wakes up and tries to tell Draco that he doesn't need good food and rest with the example of crystal pendants? Um, how one wouldn't give crystal pendants to someone who had no use for crystal pendants? And Draco should not give Harry gifts unless they are books on Healing because otherwise they would go to waste? And Draco gets angry because Harry's lack of care of himself will one day go too far and jeopardise a patient because Harry will be too tired to Heal him?
I'm really hoping I haven't mixed this up with some other fic, how embarassing. :(
Oh, I see what you mean! Yes, that scene is next. (I was thinking you were talking literally about Draco giving Harry a crystal pendant, and I was wondering why I didn't remember writing that).
I think what I find most fascinating is the fact that when I read this originally, I agreed so often with Harry and his musings, his thoughts. Yet, now, reading this from the Malfoy POV I find myself feeling that what they think and say makes perfect sense and that Harry really is the mystery. This illustrates to me that when we truly look at other POV's we get a much clearer picture and are able to understand even the most complicated person in a better way. No matter how distasteful we may find someone it is always best to realize that everyone has a story and it is no less valid than our own.
I'm not sure I agree with the Malfoys more- because I did write BBU with a sense of what they were thinking when they disagreed with Harry- but I'm pleased that you find the perspective so complementary depending on whose eyes you're sharing. That's usually one of my goals: to try and show how perspective changes everything.
Mmmm ... no, I wouldn't say I agree with the Malfoys more. Harry's line of thinking meshes more with my own thought path. I think what I meant was that it is startling how much more we comprehend when we take off the blinders and actually try to see things from more than one perspective. Even when that perspective comes from those we believe we have nothing in common with. Logically, I think we all know that but then when I read something like this where I actually begin to understand the logic it hits me more strongly. Your stories aren't simply entertainment. They make me think and those are my favorite stories of all.
Heee, Harry just can't win against the Malfoys when they're teaming up! Draco being jealous of a spell is hilarious, and I love how Lucius knows exactly how to bait Harry. Wonderful work!!
