Heracles stepped in to the petstore to avoid a sudden rain (hopefully only a shower). He immediately zoned on the kittens, though slightly dismayed they were behind a glass. Not cat should be put in a box...
However, he was distracted by the sight of a familiar face... or back, in this case.
"Kiku!" he called out, delighted, ignoring the startled look his loud greeting garnered from the shopkeeper as he went to pat at Kiku's back. "Didn't expect to see you here. Thinking of getting a pet?" Almost at once, he turned back to small cats, smiling softly as they came curiously up to the glass, peering up at them. "Mister, could you open this one for a moment so we could get a closer look at these kittens?" he asked, smoothing over the rather sudden request with a sunny smile, the one he reserved for people he wanted a favour from.
Recovering from the almost-heart attack from the shout and sudden hand on his back, Kiku stammered a quick apology to the owner, who was opening the door to bring out a kitten.
"Actually...I was just watching. I already have a dog, and Willem has a cat and a rabbit." It struck Kiku that it had been rather a long time since he had seen Heracles. Perhaps even as far back as the one night of the rescue..."It is quite unexpected to see you here as well. You're planning on buying a kitten?"
"Ah... perhaps," Heracles replied, lying easily for the shopkeeper's benefit. In reality he had of course planned no such thing, but it was as good an excuse as any.
He petted the small kitten, smiling indulgently as it grasped onto his coatsleeve with needle shark claws.
"Careful you don't fall, little friend..." he mumbled in Greek, waving a finger in the kitten's face. It went crosseyed and meowed indignantly, before trying to hit the offending object with a paw.
As the shoopkeeper stepped away to talk to another customer, Heracles leaned closer to Kiku to whisper "Actually, just wanted at least one of them out of that awful box. Not that I wouldn't love to take one home but... I should ask my cousin first, at least," he mused with a sigh.
Kiku chuckled at the reasoning and the antics. During the time he'd been corresponding with the grade-school Heracles, there had always been something about cats included in the letters. Cats doodled in the margins, questions about what sort of cat Kiku liked, and more difficult ones about what he thought cats thought about in their free time. It had been an exercise in English, certainly, trying to coherently answer each and every question. It seemed that the love of cats had not diminished with age.
"How have you been? It feels like quite a while since I saw you last."
