She had only stepped out for a minute.

She had only stepped out to head (or limp) towards the women's restroom at the end of the hall, hand absently reaching behind her to switch off the light via reflex as the door lay partially opened behind her. The building was near empty, or her floor was at least, so no one could really blame Veronika for assuming she could leave her office unlocked for what was really a minuscule break.

However, upon returning and with the light back off, Veronika noticed that the steel ruler she often had with her was missing, no longer on her desk and on top of the neat stack of papers she had left behind.

...or formerly neat stack, as the sudden theft of her ruler had caused the pile to become slightly messy.

Lips pursed, Veronika moved to check if her purse and cell phone were still there. And they were, to her confusion.

"What in the world," the Czech woman murmured, brow furrowing somewhat as she sat back down on her desk chair.

Final line drawn and last flyer torn, Sindre gathered up the papers and stacked them in the relatively-cleanest place he could find. He didn't want Professor Montour losing them in his office and making Sindre repeat the whole project.

He was well into grading the quizzes when he realized he hadn't ever returned the ruler. Damn. Glancing between what he had yet to do and the purloined item, Sindre sighed again. He should probably return it.

Making his way back toward the office, he hesitated a moment when he saw that the professor had returned, and it was one he didn't recognize. With a mental shrug, Sindre stepped into the office, dropped the ruler on the desk, and turned to leave.

The mysterious disappearance of her ruler had left Veronika wondering if it had been a victim of bizarre and petty theft or if, perhaps, someone had come by her office and borrowed with the intent of bringing it back shortly. However, after spending quite some time pouring over quizzes and inserting grades into her online grade book, the Czech woman realized that, perhaps, the building (or her room, rather) had been infiltrated by a thief with a fetish for office supplies.

There was also the assumption that she had forgetful colleagues who couldn't return things.

Just as she was about to gather her things and leave for the day, Veronika found herself pausing, red pen in hand as her eyes raised to find a rather stoic faced blonde entering her office-

With her ruler.

And there he was walking away without a word.

"Excuse me," she piped up, voice dangerously sweet as she set her pen down, chin coming to rest on her palm as she stared at the back of the retreating blonde. "But it is a bit rude to take another person's belongings ( ... )

Sindre paused in the doorway, turning his head to the professor, examining her slowly. "I don't see how," he responded. "Taking it did no harm, so I don't see what I have to apologize for. Besides," he shrugged. "You weren't using it, and I returned it."
