Kiku was struck with the odd sensation that he was actually nervous to eat with Willem tonight. He spent a long while carefully chosing his outfit, debating on the formality of the occasion. He had finally settled on a nice shirt and slacks. No tie.
It wasn't as if Willem hadn't seen him in everything from pajamas to a maid dress, but the part of his brain that was wired to think like a teenage girl told him that the first date was an important one, even if they had been close friends for six years.
Now, as he neared the entrance to the Vargas Pizzeria, he spotted the familiar form of his date and tried to quell the nervous butterflies in his stomach. He looked very nice tonight. Kiku hoped he hadn't been waiting long.
"Good evening," he greeted simply.
Kiku sort of hoped Feliciano wasn't working tonight.
At that moment his phone rang, and he pulled it out of his pocket to silence it. He turned back to the other man, about to continue their conversation, when the phone rang again. Scowling, the Dutchman looked down at his caller id.
"It's my boss," he said, glancing back up at the other man as he stood. "I'll go take this and then I'll be right back."
They weren't too far away from the front door, so he ducked outside to answer it.
Kiku nodded, understanding that it would be better to take this than to leave the boss unanswered. He was just feeling lucky that he would never be in this position again when a hand closed around his shoulder.
With a start, he turned to see who exactly the hand belonged to. The face was familiar, but it took a small stretch to place it with a location in his memory.
"Fancy seeing you at a place like this," the guy, who Kiku had realized by this time was a regular customer at the cafe, greeted. He had not removed his hand. "Although I almost didn't recognize you without your cute little dress. What are you doing, eating all by yourself?"
Uncomfortably, Kiku gave a weak smile. Being rude to a regular was bad for business, but...
The call from his boss didn't take long, since he could agree to work a later shift the next day to cover for a coworker with an emergency. After getting things settled, he turned his phone off to avoid further distractions and headed back to the table.
Only to discover that there was a strange man standing over his date, hand on Kiku's shoulder. Kiku looked like he was trying to be polite, but the strained smile and the stiffness in his whole frame spoke of of just how much he wanted away from this.
Willem strode the last few steps from the table, taking the man's wrist and pulling his hand away from Kiku's shoulder. He couldn't help but enjoy the way the man's eyes went wide at the sudden use of force, or the way the he took a step back as the tall, broad shouldered Dutchman stepped in between him and Kiku.
"He and I are currently on a date," he said, arms coming up to cross at his chest. "Was there something you needed?"
The sever looked between the two of them, and quickly set the pizza down and left. Willem didn't spare him much attention, too concerned with the suddenly lost looking Japanese man who was apologizing too him for he wasn't sure what.
He sat down in the seat next to Kiku's, turning it so he was facing the other man. He was close enough that they could have a private conversation, but not so much that he was in the other man's space.
"He looked like he was bothering you," he said, voice soft. "Are you okay?"
Did I do something wrong? he thought but did not add.
"No, I'm fine...That just...I was a little surprised."
He shook his head. It was very rare that he was accosted by anyone outside of the cafe. And the fact that it happened in the middle of a date--his first date with Willem--was poor timing indeed.
He was confused by the question for a few seconds, and couldn't help but frown softly when he understood.
"I'm fine," he replied. "I didn't like that he was upsetting you."
He wanted to reach out and take the other man's hands in his, run his thumbs over the backs in a silent gesture of comfort. But the fact that they were in public stopped him.
Although, as his glance shifted to their meal,it did give him an idea for another gesture.
"What do you think about getting this to go and eating it at one of our apartments?"
It'd be much quieter, and maybe they could dispel some of the awkwardness if they tried this in a more familiar environment.
"It's not your fault. He should have been able to converse without getting in your personal space." Willem replied, signaling the waiter to bring them a to go box.
Not too much later, the meal was paid for and the two were walking along the sidewalk towards the bus station with their pizza. Willem held it in the hand on the opposite side of where Kiku was, while his free hand kept brushing against the other man's.
Kiku could pretend that the first few brushes were on accident. But it became increasingly obvious that it was not the case, and that his boyfriend was asking for permission to hold his hand.
And despite it being somewhat public...he discovered that he would not mind terribly. With a red face, he curled his fingers around Willem's.
He was a bit startled when he felt Kiku's hand curls around his. He looked down at their joined hands, then up at Kiku's red face. And then a warm, bright smile broke out on his face. He gave Kiku's hand a soft squeeze.
The rest of the the walk to buss stop was made in comfortable silence.

The Japanese man blinked up at his date, looking lost as to what had just happened.
"Willem, I'm...sorry...I'm not sure what..."
And then the pizza arrived.

But he really did enjoy the idea of something familiar and comfortable to cast off the discomfort.
"Do you think they would let us change this to takeout?"
