It had been a cautious introduction. Roderich had dusted off his memories of Harvard and remembered the American coffee houses that had made him homesick for Vienna at best and left him on the verge of tears at their worst. The unadorned front of the Coffee Shoppe, along with the extra “pe” in its name, had left Roderich dubious about the quality of the coffee served there. He eventually decided he didn't have much to lose; in a city otherwise made up of fast-food espresso and Starbucks, he didn't have much choice, either
( ... )
Toni blinked blearily at his name. And another time at the guy who had just said it. He knew this face. Pretty well, actually, for a number of reasons. Namely because they happened to be related through some way or another.
Roderich wasn't sure what he had expected. Perhaps a little shock, as he was experiencing, at running into relatives in coffee shoppes in large American cities. Or perhaps an inquiry into why he was in the country at all. At least something of the boundless and sometimes frankly annoying energy Antonio was known for. He certainly hadn't expected an inquiry into his sleeping habits. Then again, it had been several years. Appearances weren't everything, after all.
"I...my job, you see. It requires, required, long hours that tended to begin before dawn." Roderich paused, unsure of how to continue. "I didn't know you were in America," he eventually decided to go with.
He waited another beat before his face cracked into a wide, sleepy grin.
"You haven't changed a bit!" Opening his arms, he encircled his twice-third-times-removed cousin-or-other in a warm hug, hanging on and transferring flecks of body glitter to the other's clothes.
He'd have stayed on longer, but luckily for Roderich, his order was placed on the counter behind him. Sliding off like a sloth, Toni went for the coffee, grin not fading in the least.
"But...what are you doing here? I mean...this is a pretty long way away from whatever it was you were always doing back in Austria. All the stuffy suits and paperwork. Though you still look kinda stuffy...but if that changed you might not be you."
Another second later.
"I just had the weirdest mental picture of you in jeans. It was kinda funny!"

"Roddy? What..."
He stared at him a moment longer.
"What are you doing awake so early?"
