His arm depressed underneath the weight of the picnic basket. It was wicker - a recent Christmas present from his mother - and complete with white and red checkered blanket: crumpets, jam, leek soup, homemade sheepherder's pie, sparkling cider, a tin of hot tea, and a set of (Arthur's) floral china, arranged so perfectly beneath a thick layer of matching checkered blanket. His other hand held a bouquet of yellow roses.
It was the only time he felt nervous walking up the wooden stairs of the stage.
After arranging a picturesque picnic on the evenly lighted stage, he leaped off the wooden platform and ran up the red velvet carpet to the light booth. The houselights faded off into the darkness, then the spotlight fell onto the picnic. He couldn't help but smile - it was like a painting, or a poster for the most unheard of and beautiful play ever to reach America: The Welshman and the Sea Maiden.
