The jingling of a bell echoed through the already semi-full dining area as Elizaveta trudged in from the early morning cold. She'd only gotten off work a mere five hours ago, and now had to go to her morning class running on three hours of sleep. She prayed to whichever god that listened that the professor would not go over cellular metabolism today- much too complicated for her frazzeled mind.
Just in case, Elizaveta had decided that perhaps a nice cup of awful American coffee would align her molecules. Even now, the smell of the over-burnt beans seemed to be working wonders. She closed her eyes and took a nice deep breath of the aroma. Beautiful. But when she opened her eyes, she was somewhat crestfallen to see someone already at the counter. Now she'll have to wait for her coffee! Of course, she still had plenty of time to grab a cup, rest a bit, then get to her eight o'clock class, but the principle of it! Elizaveta groaned silently as she got in line behind the dark-haired man.
"Well, you've come to the right place, Antonio. Tough day?" Alfred asked with a quirk of a smile and a raised eyebrow as he punched some numbers into the cash register. While the till rang he quickly ducked to the coffee making area to pour a venti cup of the day, a blend he knew was strong enough to counter whatever exhaustion that the man in front of him was suffering.
They knew one another from the area, and from Antonio gathering his energy fueling coffee from this particular Starbucks regularly.
Antonio nodded, catching the aroma of the coffee and his mouth nearly watering in anticipation of the drink in front of him. "Si, class went late last night again and I got a ton of homework" the spaniard explained lightly as he patted his pockets for his wallet. When realization hit him however he tensed up and clenched his teeth together
( ... )
Elizaveta watched the scene unfold impassively, her brain too tired care. But as she strode to the counter, she caught a glance of the forlorn man. He looked to be in as bad a shape as she, and, God, was he going to cry? Who knew dashed hopes of caffeine salvation could make a man so emotional?
Sighing, she turned back to the good-looking blonde behind the counter. "Eh, is it cool if I buy that guy's drink for him?" she asked, gesturing to the man in question. "Looks like he needs it pretty bad."
