When celticdragonfly and I were doing our first mutual househunt (a few months after she moved in with me) we encountered one rental with a bargain-minded landlord. Apparently some place had a sale on red carpet. Bright red carpet. As in "can't see the blood until it dries" carpet. We nicknamed it the "axe murderer house" and didn't go back.
While I've never actually faced this question (that I know of; for all I know there may have been horrible crimes committed in the two Tennessee apartments I've lived in), I think for me it would be a function of time. Someone was killed in this house years before I was born? Probably not a big deal for me. Last year? No, I think I'd look elsewhere.
I have to assume, being as it was built around 1850, that numerous people have died in this house.* None of them have made their presence felt. I don't know of any heinous murders involved . . .
*Two people died in the house where I grew up, and that's about a century newer. Both Dad and Mom died at home.
Just off hand, I would think that my mother's lingering dementia and bedridden death over the course of years would be more likely to soak into the plaster and hardwood floor than a quick axe-murder . . .
The timing and notoriety would be definite considerations in occupation or buying. I don't know I could even walk into the bathroom where Andrea Yates drowned the kids, much less think of living in the house itself. News setting up in the front yard would not be welcomed at any time
