Welcome to our eighth prompt post.

As ususal, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) All fills for prompts of the earlier prompt posts go in the post the prompt was posted in. No re-posting or splitting up prompts and fills.
2) Self-prompt when you post unprompted fic. (This means posting what the fill is about in a first comment, like a real ( Read more... )

One or both Milibands discover/debate the merits of "The Dialectic of Sex" OR if you want to go really out there, AU in the utopia (dystopia?) as described ideal by the book.

Takes me back to my sixth form sociology where everything began 'us feminist marxist sociologists believe'... Down with capitalism! Down with patriarchy! Down with the family! Lol.

...Anyway, seconded. I'm sure MMil made sure they're both up on their feminist theory.

Best book I ever read.

Which bit don't you agree with: the analysis of oppression by patriarchy and subordination of gender, the idea of a revolution based on gender lines, or the resulting ideal society where the gender division becomes irrelevant (and therefore leading to the scenario you describe)?
Not looking for a fight, just interested.

Not the OP, just another Firestone reading anon - I find the resulting ideal society difficult to get my head around. The vestiges of my former Tory self don't want to give up on the functionalist family...

I kept thinking as I read the book "yes, yes, yes, ummm the race stuff is a bit weird, yes, yes" and then she was like "okay here's what we gotta do" and I was like "...wait, what?" It probably got a bit too utopian and radical for me? Like I don't know if science is ever going to make her ideas about procreation possible, and I don't necessarily agree that children are subjugated in any and all family units. And the perceived eradication of incest and IIRC paedophilia (since age of consent doesn't really matter when children are equal to adults?) taboos was a bit too much for me. :D

So in short I agree with her on the patriarchal family unit being oppressive to women but I'm not totally down with her conclusions of how this system should be overthrown and what the results should look like.

avid doesn’t know how to deal with it, so he refuses to talk about it. Ed doesn’t know how to put into words what he feels about it, and so he’s an accessory to the enforced silence ( ... )

;____________;

‘Do you think that that’s all it is, David?’ He forces himself to continue. ‘We feel so bad about it because other people tell us we should?’
OP here & ohhhh this is perfect. ♥ I am always in the mood for some gut-wrenchingly angsty Milicest.

And lol, I love that this is the one meme where I can be like "So this radical socialist-feminist u guise" and not have people be like "....wtf are you smoking" in response.
