Andy wakes, a little after 3am, his bladder insistent. As he stumbles through the darkness towards the ensuite, a now once, twice or if he's really unlucky, thrice nightly ritual he becomes aware of a new sensation deep in his pelvis, a pressure, not painful, but definitely noticeable and clearly distinct from the now comforting heaviness that comes from carrying a child within and the familiar feeling of a bladder full to bursting

It is then, as he rubs his hand absentmindedly over the stretch-mark flecked skin of his bump that he feels something odd, a dull ache which begins in his lower back which intensifies as it wraps around to his stomach and moves,wave-like, down the length of his suddenly rock hard bump before slowly fading into nothingness. It is nothing like the Braxton-Hicks contractions he has been experiencing with increasing frequency over the past few weeks, which he feels as an uncomfortable tightening in his pelvis, and completely unlike any sensation he has ever felt before. He breathes deeply as he wonders if this is it, he is surprised by how calm he feels

He is, truth be told, a little bit terrified of what is to come. Caroline has told him, time and time again, that is safest to go forward with a natural birth. One of first things he had requested after finding out about the pregnancy was a Caesarean section, however, Caroline had explained that because of his anatomy, natural birth would be safer, provided that the baby remained small enough to fit through his pelvis. The risks of having a Caesarean section, Caroline had explained, included, severe haemorrhaging, adhesions and permanent damage to his ability to function sexually. Natural birth had its risks too, Caroline had explained, though, in her experience, they were significantly less than those of going through with a Caesarean section. Andy had convinced himself, that the pain was nothing to be afraid of, however, now that it has begun, he is beginning to worry. It's not that the pain is worse than he had expected it to be, not that he had really known what to expect, it is more a fear of what is to come, a fear of how much

He gathers up his things and walks back into the bedroom, Ed is laying on his back, spread eagle, snoring lightly and Andy is irrationally pissed off about that, the bastard, after months of endless worrying, he is sleeping like a baby when it actually counts. Prick. Andy realises that this is just fear talking and he is not really pissed off with Ed but that doesn't stop him from shaking Ed awake just a little bit more violently than strictly necessary

Andy and Ed sit on the bed for a couple of minutes, after that, just holding hands, silently preparing themselves for the next step. "Can you pass me the phone?" Andy says breaking the silence, "I need to call Caroline

So walking is what they do. A slow circuit, starting in their bedroom, moving along the hallway, through the nursery and back along the hallway to their bedroom again, stopping at first every fourth circuit, then every third and eventually every second circuit to ride out the waves of pain. Two hours pass and the contractions are now coming every six minutes. Walking is becoming more difficult now, there is an almost overwhelming constant pressure deep in his pelvis and the baby's head feels a little like a bowling ball between his legs. His hips and back ache. The contractions are even more intense now, they build from nothing to peaks within seconds and threaten to consume him, in between Ed walks next to him with his hand on his stomach, so he can feel them build under his hand and prepare, when they come Andy wraps his hands loosely around Ed's neck and hangs heavily off him, swinging his hips in a wide circle and moaning deeply, rhythmically as his distended stomach distorts with the force of the sensations rushing through him,

The car ride is awful. Without the freedom to move the contractions overwhelm him, he lets out series of soft, weak screams as each reaches its peak, it is hard to breath and all he can concentrate on is the pain, he squeezes his eyes shut and tries to block everything out, to disappear. In between he forces himself to open his eyes and concentrate on Ed, who grips the steering wheel white knuckled, staring straight ahead, needing to concentrate on driving. Focusing on Ed between the engulfing waves is all Andy can do to stop keep himself from drowning in the pain. Things are picking up quickly now, the contractions go from being five minutes apart,lasting 70 seconds to three and a half minutes apart, lasting 90 seconds on the 20 minute drive to the hospital. The pain, which had been largely confined to his stomach and back is now radiating through his arse and thighs as well. It is getting difficult to control his emotions, to not cry. He had promised himself that he wouldn't cry, he could allow himself to scream, to moan, to groan,

The blood pressure and pulse check are over quickly and all is fine. Another contraction comes and goes and it is clear, from the steady whooshing of the Doppler, that the baby is doing well too. Andy takes a deep breath, relieved and steels himself for the internal exam Caroline needs to do. Andy dislikes internal exams at the best of times, he feels exposed, and the passage between his uterus and his external opening has been quite tender over the past few months, changing form in preparation for birth

Andy huffs out a breath and uncurls himself from the birthing ball he is kneeling against, dragging himself to standing with great difficulty as the pain lessens but doesn't fade completely, the pain hasn't faded completely in more than an hour now, in between the peaks there is a constant, gnawing ache in his pubic area that is, in someways more difficult to cope with than the contractions. He can't do this anymore and isn't going to. Walking is nearly impossible but he has to get out of this room, he needs to go home. He can't have a baby, the whole idea is ridiculous. It takes all his concentration, but slowly he is moving forward. Somewhere behind him he can hear Ed's voice, distant and foreign

Long minutes pass and Andy finally comes back to himself. The shaking and nausea ease and with the next contraction his breath catches as it peaks and he grunts involuntarily as a new sensation, a desperate need to bear down, courses through his body. The sensation is all consuming, he pushes slightly, more of an experiment than a real effort and feels a pop followed a gush of warm fluid running down his legs

Caroline and Ed help him stand and almost immediately Andy feels a contraction, his first in seven minutes begin to build, he leans heavily against Ed, barely able to take his own weight and breathes deeply. Caroline was right, it feels nothing like the horrible, uncontrollable endless waves of the first stage. This one begins at the top of his bump and he can feel it pushing the baby downwards as it moves down his uterus, at its peak the need to bear down returns and he pushes with it. He feels the baby move a little further down as he does so and then slip back when he stops. Pushing feels good. These contractions feel good. These contractions are doing something useful, bringing his baby slowly closer to the world. He is surprised to find himself feeling disappointed as the contraction slips away

15 more minutes pass and the burning sensation is constant, the baby, who had been slipping back slightly between contractions, isn't anymore, each time he pushes she moves downward a little more and the burning sensation becomes even more pronounced. He can feel the entrance of his external opening beginning to stretch and his anatomy becoming distorted. He is becoming less aware of what is going on around him as all his attention is channelled towards getting the baby out of his body and into his arms

The baby, less than happy at the sudden change in her circumstances wails as Caroline places her into his arms. She is the most beautiful creature he has ever seen. She is covered in gunk and blood, her head is oddly shaped and her face is scrunched-up as she screams but she is beautiful. Above him, Ed's breath is coming in gentle sobs

Wow, this is amazing! Anon doesn't usually read Burnballs, but thanks to the meme has discovered that she likes mpreg fic (go figure...). All Andy's emotions and the detail of the descriptions are just perfect! Everyone, or at least every lolitician, about to give birth should read this!
