TXF 2.0 seems to be taking that away. The aliens aren't a threat.
The thing is though, CC has flip-flopped on this before, multiple times. Now that he had Mulder go and say DEFINITIVELY NO, nuh-nuh, NOPE to the power of 10 on the whole alien thing, I'm pretty sure the season-ender will come back with some dramatic reveal that no, alien threat is still among us! "Govt vs. Alien" ambiguity is like the single constant thread that has run through the entire show over 20+ years, so much so that it was made fun of in Jose Chung's from Outer Space, the definitive meta episode of the show. I can't see Carter making a decision one way without yanking our chains the other way. /am cynical.
Yeah, I guess I'm responding to something in the episode's vibe. I felt like there were little sparkles drawn all around that part, like CC was going "OMG you guys, wait till you see this, it's all FRESH and RELEVANT!!1!" It felt different than the same old "…or are they?…'
But there are no guarantees on the accuracy of my CC-vibe-meter. ;-D
