Grrrrr...

One side effect of the trip to Portland is that Squeaky is now weaned, and I've got to say, that twice-daily dose of oxytocin from nursing was doing a *lot* to keep my mood even. I have lost all patience with the kids. I had this glorious week of NEVER BEING INTERRUPTED, and rather than being sated by it I just want more, more, MORE ( Read more... )

It's pretty fun. I come and go with actually using it, but you can set your own nutrition goals and there are a buttload of different groups you can use (plenty that aren't weight loss, I'm sure you'll be able to find one in line w/ your goals) plus, I've found the free stuff is more than enough, and you don't have to bother w/ the paid.

I especially like how you can make your own foods w/ all the ingredients you use and find out the nutritional info of the recipe, but you'd probably enjoy the communities and challenges. I had to dabble a while before I got the hang of it, but it's pretty user-friendly once you do.

I'm kaworksout on there, if you end up joining and feel like friending me. :)

Wow, sounds like a hard a hard adjustment. And all I can do is to wish you well, which I heartily do.

Thanks. Hormonal changes always have an impact on my underlying mood and attention problems; at least this time I have a trusted therapist who will help tweak my brain if I can't reach equilibrium on my own in a reasonable amount of time. I haven't always been so lucky, during other major hormonal transitions (like my first pregnancy, a.k.a. The Pregnancy of DOOM).

I hear you on the interruption - I think I am probably less sensitive to it than you, but it still gets me sometimes. Also noise gets me, which, kids are noisy!

So, weaning - now you can get really really drunk! Okay, maybe not your goal. For food games, I have no idea how you eat now, but you could think about trying to eat locally (to X%, depending on your resources) or seasonally (though right now that gives you a lot of turnips I'm afraid), or just "5 vegetables a day."

We're vegetarian at home (the kids and I eat meat in restaurants sometimes), but we eat way too much pasta and pizza. I know from experience that refined starches suck the life out of me -- except for when I'm pregnant or nursing, in which case the simple carbs seem to get turned directly into baby/milk without affecting me much. So I know I'm going to have to up the whole grains and veggies in my diet dramatically if I don't want to be crashing every day at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, like I used to before I figured out the pattern.

But that's a pain in the ass, plus the kids are going to bitch and complain at dinner every night, so it's hard to get excited about it. Tapping into my susceptibility to peer pressure & my love of social approval would be one way to get it to stick. Hmmm... once the farmer's market opens in April, I might be able to find an "eat local" challenge in the area -- I know some people had one going last summer.

A friend is blogging her way through the Whole Foods Cookbook in an attempt to get herself to eat more veggies - you might compete, or be inspired! (Also, she notes how her 18 month old reacts to every meal).
