All Saints Day

That was Sunday, and of course we sang "For All The Saints", which is surely one of my favorite hymns. Then I decided to try to narrow down my Top Ten favorites (not including Christmas carols), and I got so distracted flipping through the hymnal that I completely tuned out the rest of the service ( Read more... )

We definitely have similar taste. I love most of those you named, though I'm not familiar with "What Wondrous Love This Is" (hey, I was raised Catholic with a 70's hymnal. Ich).

I also have a terrible weakness for Holst's "O God Beyond All Praising." It's big and bombastic and slightly militant and you can shake the rafters with it.

Now that I'm older, I can barely listen to anything from Glory and Praise without shuddering; that's the 70s hymnal I was stuck with for years. When I was still Catholic, though, we used to do a version of "On Eagle's Wings" that was so ultra-harmonized and descanted and basso profundo-ed that it brought the congregation to their feet every. Damn. Time. We'd just smile and revel in our manipulative choral glory.

I actually own a book called "Why Catholics Can't Sing", by a pissed-off Catholic who longs for better hymns.

Funny, we sang For All The Saints at church on Sunday. We (the bell choir) performed Sine Nomine as a postlude. It was very pretty.
