I read an article today that went along your line of thought and that I really "enjoyed" for as much as one can enjoy an article on a topic like this. The basic premise was that this was not an attack on "the free world" as people like to say, but on "LGBTQA" specifically and that we shouldn't call it anything but that, because sadly, LGBTQA are not as free as other people. We'd like to think so in and in some larger cities that might be the case to some extend, but I for one, live in a city that has the largest pride in Europe and I still hear derogative talk about LGBTQA people almost every week. Also, there is still so much that needs to be made equal, like in terms of marriage and adoption and it's important to remember that we've come far, but there is still a ways to go and thus we can't just say "we" were attacked but rather make sure that allies stand together with the LGBTQA community and keep speaking up for them in situations like now, but in every day matters as well ( ... )

I think the thing that people who aren't LGBTQA see this, they see it as an isolated incident without considering that it's an act that exists because of the latent and tolerated transgressions they partake in. Or at the least, they see it as a 'not us' problem, but it is- it's a statement and crime against a minority on a global scale saying that even in a place you should've felt safe, you're anything but.
