life is what your choices make it. if you don't want to be clare, don't be.

and even if you're valerie, crying is ok. it actually releases chemicals that when built up in the body lead to feeling sad.

P.S. There's nothing wrong with falling for one of your professors. I had a crush on my bio professor last semester. :-) Though I would've preferred a version of him that was 20 years younger (my age).
