GRAH. AUSTRALIA GRAH.

I'm soooo pissed off right now. My mum just told me our internet provider emailed her and told her that I've already used over half the download allocation for this month. Which is INTERESTING, because we were, before I left, on an UNLIMITED plan. But no, now that mum checks, they've moved us to a 20 Gig plan. 20G vs unlimited?! there's a big ( Read more... )

Yeah, internet providers in Aus are fucked!

I'm currently on an ADSL 2 plan w/ iinet. Pretty good speeds but only 20gb peak time. We have an additional 40gb off peak (which is 2am-12midday) so if you can co-ordinate your downloads in those times it's ok but still not the most convenient service.

2am to midday? Hm... that is kinda the wrong time of day, but I could make it work. XD But that's a kind of strange configuration. I'll check out the iinet site though. Thanks for the info!

Australia is so backwards!!! How can they go from having unlimited to just not??

Check out http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-plan.cfm, you can do a search there and find plans and providers for you, even search based on what criteria you do and don't want in your plan.

Dunno if you have them in Sydney, but we use Internode, and they have been nothing but wonderful; we don't need unlimited though, we only use half of our 8gb limit.

Ah! Cheers for that link, it's very useful indeed. Internode seems to be nationwide, so I shall have a look into them as well.

Any plans for an indoor meet anytime soon? I just wasn't up for 50 degrees in the Gardens last week, plus I only checked the board that Sunday, looked at my clock and it was like 11.30am. Really hoping to bring Sass back to you soon though. I've taken his head off and put it in a separate container, so make sure you remind me before the next meet so don't forget to bring his head as well as the body.

hehehe... a headless Sass would be, er, interesting. XD I'll try remind you! Thanks again for looking after him and sueding him for me.

I think there might be a plan for one in April sometime. I'm not really sure. I think you chose the right thing - it was so frigging hot last Sunday, it was crazy.

They moved you without your consent or even letting you know? WTF? Are you still paying the same?

Yes. -_- Actually, I exaggerated a little. Apparently we went from an 'unlimited' account to a 60G account, which then innexplicably turned into the 20G account. All were the same price (which is $%&$(*# anyway), and there is really unbelievable clause in the contract about them being able to change the terms or rates or something without notice after the innitial year contract. Since we've been with Bigpond about 4 years, it's way past the point where they have to tell us anything. Which is shoddy as hell.

I'll let you in on a well-kept secret: Clauses like that are almost always invalid, they're just in there to scare you. This is especially the case when it's a standard term contract (i.e. where they're a big corporation and you're an individual consumer who doesn't have the resources to negotiate with them). Obviously we're in different jurisdictions, but both are common law and both run on the same principles. As such, I'm sure there's an Aussie equivalent of the Consumer Protection Act or the Unfair Contract Terms Act which prevents those clauses from meaning anything in law.

You're probably not interested in taking this very far, but if you wanted to, you could almost certainly sue them for breach of contract.

I wish I had the time and motivation to sue them! But thank you for the information. I guess it's hard to think outside the box of 'what they say goes' - I wouldn't have thought to question the clause, even if I do think it sounds completely unreasonable and ridiculous. There is a consumers protection act, and it might well be able to deal with this sort of thing, but I'm sure Telstra (the main company) banks on people not going after it because of the hassle. Which infuriates me, but unfortunately I'm one of that majority.
