I am squeeing on many levels over this fic. First, I do the dance of joy when people see fit to incorporate Hornblower's dry wit in a fic and you did it masterfully. Secondly, I love the sense of determination and resolve you show in him here, even as he admits his fears to himself. Lovely! Thirdly, the detail you've added in here is wonderful...the sounds, the smells, and the history of how a random quote leapt into his skull at such a moment. :D Finally, that something on Scaryfangirl might have assisted in this endeavor! Huzzah all around! :) Thanks for sharing this (and I hope that the flu is well behind you now!)

The flu is fortunately left far in my wake, thank you!

I think Horatio's somewhat cranky humor gets ignored in favor of his other cranky aspects a little too often--I'm glad you agree! This ended up being a lot of fun to write, and I owe you for giving my Muse the necessary kick in the behind. Thanks!

Oh, Horatio. So fussy about the smells. *loves* I love his determination and the ending. Excellent!

*grin* He is a bit of a fuss, that boy, but oh so lovable naetheless. The ending just sort of appeared out of nowhere this afternoon and I was thrilled. Glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, Horatio. I do love how you get in his head. He's so very smirky to himself - well away of his failings, and yet able to see humor. As scaryfangirl said, it's so rare that we get to see Horatio's humor come through.

I think he loses a lot of that humor as the books progress--he gets more self-critical and the tally of his losses gets too heavy to smirk at any more. Early on, though, he has that humorous awareness that endears him to us even in his more prickly states. And of course, Ioan plays that piece of him up wonderfully, and far better than I. Thanks for the compliment, though! *grin*

Thought I'd add this as it amused me...apparently if you look at the picture, 'Hornblower knows surrender' is the crucial wording of this story.
