I was in charge of walking inconspicuously around the small store while Mom collected supplies. It had been my assignment throughout this whole raid. I was about forty feet away, pacing the desert, waiting for Mom.
I tucked some of my thick black hair behind my ears and tried to shade myself. I had my Dad's pale skin, and I was always getting sunburnt. I always wished my skin could be like Jamie's or Mel's, they never got sunburnt, just tan.
I sat down on a large rock and played with my shoelace. My shoes were tattered and torn, and I needed new ones. In fact, lots of my clothes needed to be replaced. My jeans were worn, and my shirts were getting too small. It was all because of the growth spurts I had in the last months. It was one of the disadvantages of being a teenager.
I drank some of my water, and looked over at the van. My father was waiting for her, and his blue eyes looked worried. I wasn't worried, Mom had gone on tons of raids in the 15 years since I was born, and even more in the years before that. It was a way of life for me, I was born in the caves, and I hadn't known any different. I was one of the few humans who had never saw the souls as parasites. My mother was one, after all.
My ears perked up as I heard a rustling sound behind me. I stood up and walked quickly to the back of the small building, trying to stay out of sight. I heard the noise again. It was following.
I picked up a large rock next to me, and prepared to throw it at this intruder. I backed up slowly, trying not make any noise, and ducked behind a tall pile of crates.
I suddenly felt a hand over my mouth. I tried to pry the hand away so I could run, but it was too strong.
"Make a sound and you die." I heard. I was suprised that the voice sounded young, maybe my age. I looked behind me. It was a boy with brown hair and eyes. He had a knife in his hand.
"Let go of me!" I said through his hand.
He took my water bottle.
"Hey!" I said, as he pulled my hands behind me and pinned me up against the wall. "That's my water!"
"Parasite." he mumbled under his breath.
"No!" I said. He wasn't convinced. My arms ached and my cheek that was against the wall screamed in pain. I moaned.
"Shut up."
"No, you shut up. I'm trying to talk to you." I said. I could feel tears in my eyes from the pain in my arms.
"I don't want to hear anything you say."
"I'm human." I said, emphasizing the last word. He looked unphased. "You don't see any scar on my neck, do you?"
He lifted up my hair and let out a little gasp. "What?" I said. "You didn't believe me?"
He still was perplexed by me. It was like he hadn't seen another human in a while. This gave me time to spin around. I pushed him to the ground, pinning his arms with my legs.
"What do you want?" I asked. He looked surprised that I was strong enough to get out of his death grip.
"Are there more of you?" he asked, acting nicer than before.
"Duh." I said sarcastically, "Why else would I be here?"
"You mean you have a family?" he said, sounding shocked.
"Yeah."
"Where?"
"Here."
"Is it just your family?"
"No. There's Uncle Kyle, Sunny, Burns, Mel, Jamie, Lily, Jared..."
"That many?"
"Yes. There's about forty of us all together."
It suddenly dawned on me that we could take him into the caves. "Stay here."
"Okay." he said.
I jogged back to the van, trying to stay out of sight. Dad looked confused when I jumped in.
"Hey, Izzy. What's the matter?"
"I found someone." I said.
"Another human?"
"Yes. Come here..." I said, grabbing his hand. Mel looked at us with confusion in her eyes, but seemed to be fine with taking Dad's spot.
I took Dad to the spot where I left the boy, and I was surprised to see him waiting. I thought he would run.
"Dad, this is..." I stopped, and looked at this boy. "What's your name?"
"David." he said, standing.
"Ok, this is David." He shook my Dad's hand.
"I'm Ian." Dad said. "And this is Isabelle."
"Isabelle." he repeated, smiling at me. It made me feel strange when he smiled at me. Something I had never felt. I pushed it to the back of my mind.
"So, David." My dad said, "Where are you from?"
"Mesa."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"That's where I used to live..."
"Hmm." David said. "What's your last name?"
"O'Shea."
"Really?"
We sat in silence for a moment, but I interrupted. "Hey, we should get back to the van."
"Yeah." Dad said, looking distracted.
"Can I come?" David asked, looking hopeful.
"Sure." my Dad and I said at once.
I tried to act normally, but I was confused. Very confused.
