Have You Tried This Meat?

Dec 03, 2011 20:22

After watching all those cooking shows, I realized that there really are a large number of different types of animals that we can eat. So I've made a list and I'm curious as to which ones you've tried. The meats I've tried are in bold:

Abalone
Alligator
Anchovy
Ant
Antelope
Bear
Beef
Bison
Catfish
Chicken
Cod
Cornish Hen
Crab
Dog
Duck
Elk

Kangaroo isn't on your list.
I had kangaroo steak in Alice Springs and Kangaroo meat pie elsewhere in Australia. will work on the rest of the list later.

Good catch! SInce I've never been to Australia, I simply didn't think of it. Have you ever seen it served in the US. Certainly not at Outback Steakhouse :-) So how was it?

What, no cat? If you're going to have dog you have to list cat. What about squirrels, and Opossums?

I just couldn't bring myself to list cat. Good call with the squirrel and opossum. Do you think they are only hunted or actually served on a menu somewhere?

Yeah, I figured that was the reason for not listing cat. I'd be the same way with dog. Though I did do a little internet searching and found that dog is more common than cat.

I thinking hunting or roadkill are you only options for squirrel and opossum.

Not sure I'd count ant or grasshopper as meat, but hey, this is your meme.

The only items on your list I have not had are bear and dog. I agree cat should be there, and horse and guinea pig (for animals more typically seen as pets in the U.S.), though I haven't had any of those, either. Have had kangaroo, squirrel, opossum

There are more than a few water creatures, vertebrate and invertebrate, I've had that aren't on your list like crayfish/crawdad, octopus, squid, sea cucumber, skate, marlin, sardine, sturgeon, orange roughy, ono ... too many! I use this website and related iPhone app to keep up-to-date on what to choose: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.aspx

I totally forgot to list octopus and squid, probably because I don't like them :-) I forgot that I had crayfish when I was in New Orleans. That's right - I remember a cooking show where they had to prepare a dish using sea cucumber (which is basically a marine slug). I was originally just going to list "fish," but decided to be more specific. I knew I hadn't listed them all.

I am impressed by the range of your culinary adventurousness!
